Open Letter

MLP aka Shamel

Dear Momma,

If you don't sit down!
I trust that this letter finds you and finds you well? I just thought I'd drop you a few lines to tell you thank you for never leaving us and to let you know that I Love you and miss you so very much. The relentless sacrifices you made while raising us and keeping our family (8 kids) together was absolutely nothing short of a miracle.  Most of your life was spent seeing to it that we had a roof over our heads, food to eat, clothes on our backs and keeping us all clean.

You may already know this but there is one thing that you have given to us that is far more important than anything you've ever done or given to us before. You gave us the word of God.  As a result, God's word, and your relentless praying led our family to know and accept His Son Jesus Christ as our personal Savior.

Ora the "Rock"
Reading from the book of Matthew Ch. 7:24-25, it says:  24 "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine; and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:  25 "and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock."  You taught us to live by these words and you made them our foundation.

But wait, there's something else I need to say to you that I have never said before.  Did you know that nearly everything I have ever learned, I learned from you momma.  Not only were you my momma, but you were also my dad too.  You taught me to still Love daddy even after he abandoned our family, after you two (had your differences) went your separate ways, you insisted that we still love him unconditionally.

Momma and Daddy
Our daddy passed away in April of this year and as he was lying on his dying bed, I glanced down at his feet and thought to myself, "OMG" my feet looked just like his."  I realized I had never even seen his feet before or at least paid any close attention to them.  I became sadden by what I witnessed and began to cry.  I thought of you momma, and these simple words I remembered you teaching us during devotion.  Reading from the book of Ephesians chapter  6: 2   "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  2 "Honor your father and mother." I knew then if it had not been for you teaching us God's word, I probably would not have been by his side.  I believe that God answered my prayers that day because for 5 days I finally got an opportunity to spend time with my daddy and it made me happy!

I believe God is going to bless you for your act of kindness (to a husband that was unkind to you) momma, and on that great day I believe you will hear Jesus say to you, "well done, good and faithful servant."

Momma, you are my earthly rock, (not compared to or equal to God), my HERO!   When you call my name my heart melts because it sounds like sweet music to my ears.  It is an Honor to be called your son, but most of all, it is a greater  HONOR to call you my Momma, I love you!

  2. With each passing day we fail to realize that there are others who care for us deeply. Focusing so much on what our next move is going to be within our daily lives that as we grow older trips to visit discontinue, and phone calls become much shorter or even a hassle. Refecltion. It has never been one of my strong suits. Perhaps I had no interest in discovering my own faults. However, reading your post helped me come to the conclusion that I want to include my family (specifically my parents)in all of my greatest acomplishments, especially knowing that I was theirs. Something as simple as a phone call just to say "I love you".... or even an open letter such as yours to show appreciation is more brilliant and impactful then it seems. Thank you. God bless.

  6. Bro, I agree with everything you have penned. We are truly blessed to have a mother who didn't put us up for adoption or had other relatives raise us. She trusted in God and He was Faithful to her and continues to be. Because of her Love for Jesus Christ, in saving her from sin and the penalty, she to desired that all her children would come to know Him too. Because of her faith, prayers and witness, I praise God that I have eternal life in Christ and will be with her throughout eternity. Thank you Lord!!! Tim...
